The Three Pillars of Engagement
After losing our children, each of us are looking for ways to heal and to honor them. Our members are invited to participate in any of the following ways.
Peer to Peer grief Support
Peer Support brings Moms together to provide comfort in a safe space. We share our stories and not only find ourselves, but our sons and daughters in one another’s experiences. Our peer weekly grief support meetings and our 24/7 messaging platforms provide a safe harbor to share our pain and healing with each other. We find solace in knowing that we desperately loved our children and tried everything we knew and believed would help. We connect with others who truly understand our grief. Together, we learn to survive.
Healing and community outreach
S.O.U.L. Moms organize cathartic initiatives for S.O.U.L. members and their families, and support community groups that are the focused on recovery efforts. Past activities have included nature walks, an annual beach retreat, sponsoring events that memorialize our children, annual drives for local treatment centers and monthly potlucks. We share our experiences and stories at schools, treatment programs, and community-based organizations in hopes that other families don’t go through what we did. We promote understanding and compassion for those suffering from the disease of SUD, changing the negative public perception of those who are afflicted with this disease, and provide resources on the dangers of using and experimenting with substances and how to get help for loved ones afflicted with this disease.
Advocating for change
In our advocacy efforts, our members engage leaders to shed light on the opioid crisis that has been fueled by fentanyl and other opioids and stigmatization for better understanding, prevention, and treatment of SUD. S.O.U.L. Moms communicate frequently with print, broadcast, and social media to share their children’s stories, messages on addiction and overdose prevention, and ways to address the opioid epidemic. S.O.U.L. Mom’s support policies and legislative action at the local, state, and federal level in the U.S. that address the opioid epidemic focusing on the fentanyl crisis.
