Why we exist
The purpose of S.O.U.L is to provide a space where mothers who have lost a child to substance use disorder (SUD), can find non-judgmental support to help cope with the loss, We also share who our child was, we find meaningful ways to re-invest in life, and, if inclined and able, we advocate in our communities to help prevent drug use and overdose.
We believe we are truly surviving our ultimate loss, but we also believe that we do not have to do it alone. We are here to support one another and our families. If you have lost your child to substance use disorder just like we have experienced, we want you to be heard, held, honored, comforted and consoled. We hope to be able to assist you and each other as we all journey toward healing together. The death of your child is an end to their life, but not to the relationship you have with them.
““This group means a lot to me. I truly believe it saved my life.””
S.O.U.L was founded in 2015 by five moms in Montgomery County who had recently lost their children to drug overdose. It all began after this article in the Bethesda Magazine “A Mother’s Heartbreak” Nov/Dec. 2015 - If you would like to read the article, you can access it here.
S.O.U.L came together in hopes of finding comfort and compassion in this unimaginable and tragic loss. Unfortunately, this small group of grieving mothers has grown significantly since then, and the group embraces new moms monthly.
The group is open to anyone who has lost a child as the result of substance use disorder. This is what we are really about, we are Surviving Our Ultimate Loss, but we are not doing it alone.
